Spinal Decompression FAQ

What is spinal decompression therapy?

Nonsurgical spinal decompression is a non-invasive, motorized traction therapy designed to relieve back and neck pain. It gently stretches the spine to change the force and position of the spinal column, taking pressure off the spinal discs and nerves.

How does it work?

The therapy uses a computerized table to precisely pull and relax the spine at specific intervals. This gentle cyclic stretching creates negative pressure (a vacuum effect) within the spinal discs. This vacuum does two things:

  • It can help pull a bulging or herniated disc back into its proper place.
  • It promotes the flow of water, oxygen, and nutrient-rich fluids into the disc so it can heal.

Does spinal decompression hurt?

No. Most patients find it quite relaxing. Because the computer system bypasses the body’s natural muscle-guarding reflex, the stretch is smooth and painless. Many patients even fall asleep during their 20 to 30-minute sessions.

Who is a good candidate for this treatment?

Spinal decompression is highly effective for individuals suffering from:

  • Herniated, bulging, or slipped discs.
  • Sciatica or pinched nerves.
  • Degenerative disc disease.
  • Spinal stenosis.
  • Failed back surgery syndrome.

Note: It is generally not recommended for pregnant women, patients with severe osteoporosis, or those with metal implants/hardware in their spine.
